Ducting and Turbulence Effects on Radio-Wave Propagation in an Atmospheric Boundary Layer
The split-step Fourier (SSF) algorithm is applied to simulate the propagation of radio waves in an atmospheric duct. The refractive-index fluctuation in the ducts is assumed to follow a twodimensional Kolmogorov power spectrum, which is derived from its three-dimensional counterpart via the Wiener-Khinchin theorem. The measured profiles of temperature, humidity and wind speed in the Gulf area o...
متن کاملAtmospheric Sound Propagation Considerations for the Birdstrike Project
Sound propagates as a longitudinal wave disturbance in compressible media such as air. If the properties of the medium vary with spatial position or if the medium itself is in motion, the sound propagation will be affected. Therefore, for the Birdstrike project it is important to understand the potential effects of atmospheric temperature, wind, relative humidity, and other effects that will be...
متن کاملBLANK NOT FILMED s 1 9 ATMOSPHERIC SOUND PROPAGATION Richard
The propagation of sound waves at infrasonic frequencies (oscillation periods 1.0 1000 seconds) in the atmosphere is being studied by a network of seven stations separated geographically by distances of the order of thousands of kilometers. One of the typical stations, in Washington, D. C., has an array of five microphones separated by distances of about 7 kilometers. Each microphone is at grou...
متن کاملAtmospheric Sound Propagation Over Large-Scale Irregular Terrain
A benchmark problem on atmospheric sound propagation over irregular terrain has been solved using a stable fourth-order accurate nite di erence approximation of a highdelity acoustic model. A comparison with the parabolic equation method and ray tracing methods is made. The results show that ray tracing methods can potentially be unreliable in the presence of irregular terrain.
متن کاملBenchmarking two simulation models for underwater and atmospheric sound propagation
Computational wave propagation models are widely used in underwater and atmospheric sound propagation simulation. In most realistic cases the physical domains involved are irregular. We have developed finite element techniques, applied to general irregular meshes and coupled with discrete, artificial absorbing boundary conditions of nonlocal type, for the Helmholtz equation and its ‘standard’ p...
